Combined with the condition of molten iron, the feasibility of applying power coal as a heat increasing agent to improve the scrap ratio of the converter was analyzed. At the same time, the influence of the power coal on the smelting cycle, smelting operation and the sulfur content in the molten steel was studied. The process of adding scrap, hot metal and power coal with the head batch of slag material was formed, which successfully increased the scrap ratio of the 50 t converter by 6% to 7% in a short period of time. It had been proved by practice that it was feasible to improve the scrap ratio of the converter by using power coal as a heat increasing agent. At the same time, the economic and social benefits of this process were remarkable, which was beneficial to alleviating the huge cost and environmental pressure of the iron and steel enterprises.
