Comprehensive evaluation of acid pellet quality based on mineralogical structure and metallurgical properties

Abstract:The blast furnace burden charge of "high basicity sinter + acid pellets + lump ore" is widely used in Chinese steel enterprises. The quality of 5 imported acid pellets is comprehensively evaluated based on chemical composition, microstructure, physical properties and metallurgical properties. The results show that the physical properties of acid pellets in North America are relatively good, the drum index is 95.67 % and 95.55 %, respectively. The compressive strength of reduced Brazilian pellets is weaker, which is 282.8 N and 347.6 N, respectively. The main mineralogical constitution of Brazilian pellets is strip hematite with more irregular pores in the iron phase. The K-type acid pellets in North America own well-developed ore crystal. The ore crystal in U-type acid pellets was maldevelopment and seriously hematite crystal fracture caused too many irregular pores. The reduction expansion index of Brazilian acid pellets is higher, which is 24.21 % and 18.05 %, respectively. The metallurgical properties of V-type and C-type acid pellets are prominent, the cohesive zone and softening zone are relatively suitable, the resistance of the material layer to the gas flow is small, which is favorable for gas flow in BF. Combined with the experimental results, the C-type acid pellets are favorable for long-distance transportation and storage due to better compressive strength. The C-type acid pellets own nice thermal strength and lower expansion coefficient under reduction state. The resistance of gas flow is lower when passing through the BF burden charged with C-type acid pellets in the molten state, which can meet the requirements of BF smelting in China.
