Abstract:The cause of the damage of the 9th ductile iron cooling staves of 2500m3 blast furnace shaft was analyzed by tensile test, metallographic analysis and the thermal stress simulation of the cooling staves by using the finite element method software ABAQUS.It was found that the thermal stress of the cooling staves caused by the temperature difference was mainly responsible for the damage. The less tensile strength, elongation and unqualified microstructure of the cooling staves make them more easily broken. The oxide layer on the inner surface of the cooling water pipe formed by oxidation during casting process and corrosion from the dissolved oxygen in the water also reduces the cooling ability of the cooling staves.
