Formation mechanism and countermeasure of scarfing stripe defect in automobile strip

Abstract:The formation mechanism of scarfing stripe defect on the surface of the hot rolled strip was studied. The results showed that the defects were mainly formed in the scarfing treatment process, because the scale on the top and root surface of the scarfing ridge was rolled into the substrate, which caused the existence of scale under the scarfing stripe. Both the instability of ridge and the metal flowing near the surface could lead to the rolled- in scale. The defect was highly heritable and could not be removed during following the hot rolling process, pickling process and cold rolling process. Through modifying the scarfing nozzles, reforming the natural gas system and optimizing the scarfing process parameters, the scarfing stripe defect was eliminated successfully. Therefore, the surface quality of automobile outer panel was improved.
