A review of testing method for volume fraction of reinforcement in metal matrix composites

Abstract:Reinforcement volume fraction in metal matrix composites is an important index for characterizing its properties. Testing methods and standard status of reinforcement volume fraction in metal matrix composites are briefly introduced. The scope, principle, apparatus, sampling and procedure for three testing methods including optical microscopy, image analyzer and matrix dissolution method are systematically summarized. And a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the three testing methods are carried out. Meanwhile, the existing testing standards of reinforcement volume fraction in metal matrix composites are analyzed. The prospects of establishing national testing standards are also discussed.
