Research and development status of high heat input welding materials

Abstract:The influences of high heat input welding on the microstructure and mechanical property of weld metal were elucidated in this paper. The different toughening mechanisms for welding materials at steel grades above 590MPa and 780MPa were introduced, respectively. The development examples of welding material for ultra- high heat input electroslag welding in Japan were listed. The research results showed that acicular ferrite with vE0 up to 123J could be obtained by changing the alkalinity of welding flux to adjust the number of oxide inclusions. Meanwhile, the welding heat input was in range of 850-1000kJ/cm. Furthermore, the current problems and development trend for the research of high heat input welding materials in China were also pointed out.
