Abstract:The change in alumina content in mould flux is the result of slag- metal interactions, including adsorbing alumina inclusions in steel and slag- metal reaction product. Alumina content has a dramatical influence on the compositions and performance stability of mould flux, and further affects the strand quality. The factors that impact on the adsorption of alumina are contact angle, wetting rate, interfacial tension, composition and performance of mould flux. The removal rate of floating alumina inclusions is determined by the interaction of mould flux and inclusions. The slag- metal reaction is more intensive in the casting process of high aluminium steel, which leads to the the changes in performance of mould flux. To achieve the relative stability of mould flux performance, some measures such as rational design of mould flux compositions or selecting anther mould flux system are discussed ,based on the experiment researches on absorption and dissolution of alumina inclusion in recent years and the research results of slag- metal reaction and variations of mould flux performance in the casting process of high aluminium steel.
