Based on the actual application status of high speed steel (HSS) roll in 1580 hot strip production line of Shougang Jingtang Company, the advantages and application characteristics of the HSS roll in reducing roll consumption costs and improving product surface quality were analyzed, and the adverse effect of the HSS roll on shape control of strip was studied in principle. On this basis, measures such as inhibiting the peeling of oxide film on the surface of HSS roll and the prediction of initial roll shape of the re-used HSS roll were put forward, so that the occurrence rate of oxide film peeling on the surface of HSS roll was significantly reduced, the product surface quality was significantly improved, and the problem of excessive crown deviation of the first few coils at the rolling sequence was effectively solved.
