Abstract:The microscopic morphology and the compositions of sliver defects on the surface of 430 stainless steel 2B plate were investigated by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that sliver defects on the 2B plate surface were caused by the CaO- SiO2- Al2O3- MgO inclusions in steel. The aluminum content of inclusions in steel as well as the occurrence of sliver defects on cold- rolling plates was reduced effectively by calcium treatment in the industry production of 430 stainless steel. After the improvement, the total oxygen content in the tundish was 32×10-6, 7×10-6 less than the conventional smelting process .Furthermore the inclusion number and the occurrence of sliver defects was decreased by 35%and 1.02%, respectively.
