Effect of electron irradiation on stability of oxides in 9Cr- ODS steel

Abstract:Electron irradiation(e-irr.)was performed on 9Cr- ODS(oxide dispersion strengthened)ferritic- martensitic steels by using HVEM(high- voltage electron microscope)at 450, 500 and 550 ℃, and the change of Y- Ti- O nano- oxides′ appearance and component were observed and analyzed before and after irradiation. The effect of electron irradiation on the stability of nano- oxides was compared at different temperatures. The results showed that nano- oxides′ size was decreased in different degrees after electron irradiation at different temperatures. The diameter reducing ratio of nano- oxides after irradiation was 8.51%(450 ℃), 19.38%(500 ℃)and 25.99%(550 ℃), respectively, and the tendency of radiation- induced change of Cr concentration inside the oxide was also 550 ℃>500 ℃>450 ℃. The void swelling was suppressed by high dispersed nano- oxides under electron irradiation. Solute atoms on the nano- oxides left the original position to matrix because of the impact of high energy electronics and diffusion of point defects, which caused the decrease of nano- oxides’size. The diffusion rate of vacancy was enhanced with the increase of temperature, so as to accelerate the decrease of nano- oxides′ size. The irradiation injury behavior of nano- oxides in 9Cr- ODS steels under electron irradiation could be conducive to the exploration of oxides irradiation damage mechanism, and provide the basis for controlling irradiation damage phenomenon in 9Cr- ODS steels.
