Abstract Surface quality defects of hot-rolled plate are mainly inclusion defects（inclusions，bubbles and warped skin）and crack defects（longitudinal crack，transverse crack and star crack）. Internal quality defects are mainly banded structure and stratification，etc. And most of these defects are associated with the quality of casting billet. To solve the surface and internal quality problems occurring in the process of continuous casting slab to plate，based on the comprehensive analysis of the production environment and the results of sample testing，the cause or mechanism of the typical defects of the slab and the plate is studied systematically，and the corresponding control technology is put forward.
