Abstract:A bibliographic review of literatures about atmospheric corrosion of steels for marine engineering and development of weathering steel has been presented, especially the related achievements in recent ten years. Firstly, the electrochemical model of atmospheric corrosion for steels is introduced. Subsequently, the protection mechanism of rust layers on weathering steel is introduced in term of rust layer structures and alloying element roles. And then, the influences of environmental factors, including the relative humidity, pollutants, light shining and damnification in rust layers, on atmospheric corrosion behavior of weathering steel are analyzed. Finally, the development of weathering steel in recent years and the effect of non-alloy factors such as grain size and microstructures on the development of weathering steel are summarized, providing guidance for the design and application of advanced weathering steel.
